Unit Proposal Notes

Thanks for many of you shared your unit ideas with me!  Here are the notes to share with you to help you to improve your unit proposal, design, and development.

Q: What content is appropriate?

A: Our unit content could be anything that we would like to instruct and deliver online to adults as professional development.  Just remember that our content and instructions must be delivered online via any CMS/LMS.  If it is not a complete only unit, at least more than 3 quarters of contents and instructions/activities should occur online.

Q: Is it must be a professional development (PD) unit?

A:  Yes, it must be a PD for teachers, staff, administrators or PD for employee trainings or any adult learners. We will have a chance to design an online unit for students in ETC647.

Q: Can I change my selected CMS/LMS from the Assignment 2 LMS/CMS Evaluations in Lesson 1?

A: Yes, you may have better understanding in CMS/LMS now so you may change your mind in selecting different tools for your final unit.

Q: What are the most common mistakes that previous students made?

A: Focusing on the online content development only.  Remember effective technology integrations include four components: Content; Delivery Technology; Instructional Strategies; and Assessment. Content: Developing online content is not hard with LMS/CMS.  Deliver technology: what tools you intend to in LMS/CMS? Discussion board, Chat room, assignment submission, grade book, blog, group space etc. Instructional strategies: referred to online/distributed instructional strategies, such as online collaboration, online student publishing, online resource sharingetc. Assessment: Need to assess whether your learners learn the content via your unit; to asses whether your integrate delivery technology effective; to assess your integrate online instructional strategies effective.

Common Feedback for Assignment 4 Diversity Research Paper

Thanks for your assignments!  Most of you have done a wonderful job and are able demonstrate clear understandings on diversity issues.  Here are some general feedback comments for your future reference.  Be sure to consider these comments and apply them to future assignments, failure to meet the requirements may result in a grade deduction in the future assignments.

  • Reflections: It is important to include your own reflections in your paper.
  • Quotes: The most common mistakes that I have seen are that students copy directly from the original papers or the abstract or use too many directs quotes.  These errors prevent the text from flowing smoothly and prevent it from making sense, providing evidence that the author did not digest the content and obtain a comprehensive understanding of the literature.
  • Research-based: After reviewing the literature in diversity issues and distributed learning, you may find that generally a superior quality of papers are found in refereed journals versus online articles, conference presentation papers and proceedings.  Students are encouraged to obtain papers from referred journal papers as opposed to conference presentations or papers, if possible.
  • APA: Follow the APA style format. Examples.
  • Title Page: A cover page for the assignment is not necessary.
  • Page Numbers: Each page should be numbered except the first page.
  • First/Second Pronoun: Avoid using the first person pronoun.  Not all scholars agree with this argument but people agree that unless we have good reasons to use first pronoun, otherwise, we should avoid using it for research paper.
  • One-sentence Paragraph: Avoid one sentence paragraph because the logical reasoning doesn't flow.
  • In-text Citation: In-text citation should be "...learning (Johnson, 2008)." Not "… learning. (Johnson, 2008)" Notice there the "." locates.
  • Cite what you read: Only cite the literatures that you actually read it.  If you did not read the article, books, chapters etc. Do not cite it because it is considered as plagiarism.
  • DL Focus: Many did not clearly identify the issues in "distributed learning" context rather than in fairly general technology integration context.
  • Writing Papers resources
  • Resources shared by students: All cited references should be bookmarked on Delicious with required tags.  Your Delicious should include the required tags so the link will take the reader directly to bookmarks for this assignment.  Our link should look like: http://delicious.com/username/etc677+Diversity+Assignment not http://delicious.com/username.  Without tags, people will see all our bookmarks on the Delicious.  You can see ETC677's students' shared bookmarks at http://delicious.com/tag/etc677+diversity+assignment

Here are a few questions for you to deepen your thoughts in online interaction research.

  • Do you believe there one ideal and effective instructions suite for various typed of online learners their uniqueness? Are we able to provide multiple instructions to suite for different learners?
  • Any critical issues to be concerned when online materials comply with ADA?
  • How could we resolve rural and urban differences?  Do they learn differently?
  • Is online learning more effective for adult learners?
  • Is technology neutral to all online learners?
  • Can mobile learning resolve digital divide in distributed learning?

Delicious Tagging Scheme Update

You may notice that Delicious recently has a major change on the interface and the update on tagging scheme.  When you tag a bookmark, we need to use a comma to separate two tags or a comma and a space.  For example: ETC677, Lesson4

When you search bookmarks with tags in the URL, we will use “+” between two tags. For example: http://www.delicious.com/tag/ETC677+Lesson4

I hope this will help you to tag your bookmarks to share with our class community.
